Biografie Maite van der Marel

Maite is geboren in Utrecht in 1986.
Tijdens haar opleiding tot docent muziek aan het conservatorium van Rotterdam (Codarts) was zij al op zoek naar vernieuwende werkvormen binnen het muziekonderwijs, terwijl ze zich muzikaal verder ontwikkelde op piano en drums. Zij vervolgde haar weg aan het conservatorium van Utrecht, waar zij in 2013 de Master of Music afrondde met ondernemerschap en jazzpiano als kernvakken. Naast verdieping van haar muzikantschap, leverde deze Master een onderzoek op naar de werkwijze creative collaborative music making, met als doel deze artistieke manier van leren in Nederland verder uit te breiden.
Ondertussen volgde zij trainingen aan de Guilhall School of Music & Drama in Londen en werkte een aantal jaren samen met inspirerende Britse workshopleiders.

Gaandeweg heeft zij haar eigen karakteristieke en energieke leiderschapsstijl ontwikkeld die zij inzet in (compositie)projecten in opdracht van onder andere TivoliVredenburg, en vele andere culturele en onderwijsinstellingen en conservatoria in Nederland.

Van 2015-2018 was zij artistiek coördinator bij de MuziekRoute, een muziekproject in krachtwijk Overvecht (Utrecht). Zij had het team van musici onder haar hoede, leidde het naschoolse ensemble, dirigeerde grootschalige concerten (met 250-400 leerlingen) en trainde leerkrachten.

Van 2017-2021 vervolgde Maite haar weg als trainer en artistiek directeur bij Sounds of Change,  om muziek in te zetten in (voormalig) conflictgebieden in het Midden-Oosten. Naast het ontwikkelen van strategie en visie, leidde ze trainingsprogramma’s in o.a. Libanon, Jordanië, Egypte en Palestina (West-Bank), en gaf trainingen rondom leiderschap, teambuilding en creativiteit in het bedrijfsleven in Nederland.

Haar nieuwsgierigheid volgend, verdiepte Maite zich de afgelopen jaren in communicatie en psychologie (Transactionele Analyse), groepsdynamiek en leiderschap (Deep Democracy) en ‘Breathwork’ (ademcoach opleiding bij Kasper van der Meulen).

Al haar fascinaties en jarenlange ervaringen komen samen in haar huidige werk, dat enerzijds haar actieve betrokkenheid in muziekprojecten in lokale gemeenschappen vertegenwoordigt in zowel Nederland als daarbuiten, alsook het begeleiden en trainen van muziek professionals die hun artistiek leiderschap, social engagement en persoonlijke ontwikkeling willen vergroten. Maite zoekt daarmee naar nieuwe betekenis en relevantie van muziek in de huidige veranderende samenleving.
Kenmerkend aan haar stijl is haar manier van bevragen, speelsheid, ontregeling, humor en verwondering. Altijd zoekt ze naar een afstemming tussen het individu en de groep en het aanspreken van diepgaande betekenis en urgentie.

Kortom: Maite is een onderzoeker en verzamelaar van mensen en creatieve ideeën, die ze samenbrengt om tot diepergaande reflectie en vernieuwing te komen. Ze jaagt anderen aan artistieke uiting te geven aan dat wat urgent is en gehoord moet worden, en om in actie te komen voor een betere, leefbaardere wereld voor iedereen.

In haar eigenwijze manier van componeren hoor je haar liefde voor avontuur en reislustigheid terug. Soms langgerekt en traag bewegend, voorziet de muziek in haar behoefte om op te gaan in een specifieke wereld.
Ze werkt graag vanuit krachtige grooves, schetst klankwerelden waarin ze je wil laten verliezen, en speelt met onverwachte harmonische wendingen en kleurrijke melodieën. Ze gebruikt graag haar stem, akoestische piano, synthesizers en elektronische beats. Intuïtief zoekt ze naar een uitdrukking van haar kwetsbaarheid, melancholische hart, maar ook een bespiegeling van de schoonheid en rauwheid van het leven dat ze ervaart tijdens haar reizen en de ontmoetingen die haar raken.

Maite van der Marel was born in Utrecht, The Netherlands in 1986.
During her bachelor of Music Education at the Codarts Conservatory of Rotterdam, Maite was already curious to explore new approaches to music education while she further developed her musical skills on piano and drums. She graduated in 2010 and continued to follow her ambitions in the Master of Music program at the conservatory of Utrecht, with the focus on entrepreneurship and jazz piano. As a result, she wrote a thesis on creative and collaborative music-making, aiming to further expand this way of working in the Netherlands. 
Since then, she took a few courses at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London and has, over the years, worked alongside inspiring British workshop leaders.

She gradually developed her own characteristic and energetic leadership style, and put this into practice in (composition) projects commissioned by a.o. TivoliVredenburg and a wide variety of cultural and educational institutions, as well as conservatories in the Netherlands.

From 2015-2018 she was artistic coördinator of the MuziekRoute in which she supervised the team, set up creative ensembles, conducted large-scale concerts (250+ kids) and developed the teacher trainer program within the schools.

From 2017-2021, Maite continued her path as a trainer and artistic director at Sounds of Change, to use music in (post) conflicted areas in the Middle East. In addition to developing strategy and vision, she led training programs in Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt and Palestine (West Bank), among others, and gave training on leadership, team building and creativity in the corporate field in the Netherlands.

Following her curiosity, Maite immersed herself in some courses in the field of communication and psychology (Transactional Analysis), group dynamics and facilitation skills (Deep Democracy) and ‘Breathwork’ (breathwork coach with Kasper van der Meulen).

While learning, her fascinations and years of experience are naturally coming together in various projects, that on one hand represent her active involvement in music projects in local communities in both the Netherlands and abroad, as well as guiding and training music professionals who want to improve their artistic leadership, social engagement and personal development. Maite thus searches for new meaning and relevance of music in today’s changing society.

Characteristics of her leadership style are her questioning, playfulness, disruption, humour and wonder. She always looks for an attunement between the individual and the group and promotes profound meaning and urgency.

In short: Maite is a researcher and collector of people and creative ideas, who brings them together to achieve profound reflection and innovation. She encourages others to give artistic expression to what is urgent and needs to be heard, and to take action for a better world for all.

You can hear her love for adventure and wanderlust in her unique way of composing. Sometimes elongated and slow-moving, the music fulfills her need to be absorbed in a specific world. She likes to work from powerful grooves, sketches sound worlds in which she wants you to lose yourself, and plays with unexpected harmony twists and colorful melodies. She likes to use her voice, acoustic piano, synthesizers and electronic beats. Intuitively she searches for an expression of her fragility, melancholic heart, but also a reflection on the beauty and rawness of the life she experiences during her travels and the encounters that deeply touch her.
